IN 2019 Life Story Board training was given to addiction counsellors in a residential adult program (AFM, Manitoba). This practice activity was part of a virtual ‘booster session’ with nine rehab counsellors following an in person training workshop. Here were the instructions.
Life Story Board practice exercise: Alex
Individual activity (30 minutes)
Here is the link to a six minute audio recording of a fictional client talking in first person voice about his seeking counselling and background to the problem.
- Begin to listen to the recording. As you listening, mentally compile the narrative elements mentioned in terms of the using the Element Cards, Markers and notation to storyboard it. Pause when you want
- Then, during the pause, lay out cards and begin story boarding.
- Listen to more of the narrative and add / re-configure the lifescape.
- Take a photo of the resultant Alex’s lifescape. Email the lifescape photo(s) to share with the group for some discussion.
The lifescape doesn’t have to be ’thick’ with all the information, it is more the idea to create something that would facilitate Alex’s process and your interaction with him as counsellor. If you want, you can elaborate the lifescape with ideas how you would work with Alex further.
